- INTRODUCTION
-
-
- sCOREkeeper is an automated duplicate bridge scoring system.
- It's primary purpose is to enable users (most likely Bridge
- Directors) to compute and maintain duplicate bridge competition
- scores and print results. The system is menu driven which means
- the user answers questions or chooses options from a list
- displayed in a menu.
-
- The sCOREkeeper System has three main programs: SCORE,
- REPORT, and HANDS. The SCORE program can score duplicate
- movements and compute multi-section match points, percentages and
- rankings. The REPORT program enables users to keep and print
- cumulative records of all duplicate session winners and ACBL
- awards. The HANDS program generates random "computer hands" that
- can be "made up" at the beginning of the competition, and hand
- summary sheets that can be duplicated and passed out at the end
- of the competition.
-
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITS
-
- The sCOREkeeper System can be run on any IBM PC or compatible
- with 80 column display and 256K memory. A printer is also
- recommended for posting results and permanent records.
- The system can handle up to five sections of play with three
- to 19 tables per section. The movements allowed are Mitchell,
- Barometer, Howell, One-and-a-half Table Appendix Mitchell,
- Scrambled Mitchell and Half Table Mitchell movements with either
- an East/West sit-out or a North/South "bump" movement. Any
- combination of different movements and different size sections
- can be run in the same session.
-
-
- GETTING STARTED
-
- The sCOREkeeper System can either be run from floppy disk, or
- installed and run on a hard disk. If you are using a floppy disk
- drive system, make a backup copy of the sCOREkeeper disk and use
- that disk as your working copy. If you are using a hard disk
- system, install sCOREkeeper on the hard disk and keep the floppy
- disk as a backup. Please refer to your operating system
- reference manual(s) for complete details on formatting disks and
- making backups. Here are some general instructions for making
- backups.
-
- Making a Backup Floppy Disk - Single Drive System
-
- Begin with a blank formatted disk. Insert the sCOREkeeper
- disk in the A drive. At the operating system prompt, type COPY
- A:*.* B: and press the Enter key. Follow the messages printed by
- the operating system. When the message tells you to insert a
- disk in drive B, use the blank formatted disk. When all files

- have been copied, a files copied message will be displayed and
- the operating system prompt will appear again.
-
- Remove the backup disk and label it "sCOREkeeper Working
- Copy". Always use this disk to operate the sCOREkeeper System.
- Keep the original sCOREkeeper disk in a safe place and only use
- it as a master.
-
-
- Making a Backup Floppy Disk - Dual Drive System
-
- Begin with a blank formatted disk. Insert the sCOREkeeper
- disk in the A drive. Insert the blank formatted disk in the B
- drive. At the operating system prompt, type COPY A:*.* B: and
- press the Enter key. When all files have been copied, a files
- copied message will be displayed and the operating system prompt
- will appear again.
-
- Remove the backup disk from the B drive and label it
- "sCOREkeeper Working Copy". Always use this disk to operate the
- sCOREkeeper System. Keep the original sCOREkeeper disk in a safe
- place and only use it as a master.
-
-
- Installing sCOREkeeper on a Hard Disk
-
- Establish a sub-directory on the hard disk that will contain
- all of the sCOREkeeper System files. Insert the original
- sCOREkeeper disk in the A drive. Use the COPY command to install
- the sCOREkeeper System files on the hard disk. For example, to
- install the system into a sub-directory called BRIDGE, enter the
- following commands from the root directory (refer to your
- operating system reference manual):
-
- C:
- MD \BRIDGE
- CD \BRIDGE
- COPY A:*.*

- INTRODUCTION
-
-
- GETTING STARTED (cont.)
-
- Checking for System Updates
-
- Occasionally updates may be made to the sCOREkeeper System.
- Type NOTES at the operating system prompt to display information
- about any changes and additions that have been made.
-
- Setting up Initial Parameters
-
- The first time you use the sCOREkeeper System some general
- information needs to be established. First make sure the
- INSTALL.DAT file is on the same drive and directory as the
- program files. (This should already be the case if a simple
- backup copy was made.) If you are using a two floppy disk drive
- system, insert a data disk in drive B for saving the data to be
- entered. At the operating system prompt, type INSTALL and press
- the Enter key.
-
- A display screen should appear containing questions about
- your printer, monitor type, etc. There are also questions
- regarding special features that are available, such as not having
- to enter trailing zeroes on raw scores. The system gives you a
- chance to verify or modify your answers before returning to the
- operating system prompt.
-
- At this point you may access any of the three main programs
- that make up the sCOREkeeper System. Each of those programs is
- described in the following sections of this manual.

- ACCESS AND MAIN MENU OPTIONS
-
-
- Most of the user's time will be spent in the SCORE program
- entering competition information, contestant names, contestant
- scores, etc. Access the SCORE program from the operating system
- prompt by typing A: and pressing the Enter key. The operating
- system prompt will be displayed again. Type SCORE and press the
- Enter key and the system displays an introductory screen to the
- sCOREkeeper System. Press any key to continue (the space bar is
- commonly used). The system displays the `Main Menu' screen.
-
- The `Main Menu' screen has the following five options:
-
- S - Start a new scoring session
- R - Read an old session from disk
- W - Write current scoring session to disk
- C - Continue with current scoring session
- X - Exit this program
-
- At this point there is no active or current scoring session.
- sCOREkeeper waits for you to enter the letter corresponding to
- the function you want to perform. If this is the first time you
- have used sCOREkeeper, begin by typing S to start a new scoring
- session.
-
- When a new scoring session is started or an old one is read
- from disk, that session becomes active. Additions and/or changes
- can only be made to an active session. Once additions and/or
- changes have been made, sCOREkeeper will not allow you to exit
- the program or activate another session until you indicate
- whether or not the new data is to be saved.
-
- S OPTION
-
- Type S if this is the first time you have used sCOREkeeper,
- or whenever you wish to start a new scoring session. If a
- session is already active and changes have been made and not
- saved, sCOREkeeper will beep and give you another chance to save
- the data before activating the new session. If you activate a
- new session without doing a save, any changes made to the
- previously active session will be destroyed.
-
- When you begin a scoring session, the system asks you to
- provide a name for the output file. There are two parts to a
- file name. The first can be up to eight characters long. The
- second is optional, must begin with a period and can be up to
- three characters long. For example, FIRST.GAM, MAY13.AM and
- MAY13.PM are all valid file names. If the name already exists on
- disk, the system displays a warning and asks you to verify
- whether or not you want the existing file destroyed. If you
- enter a valid file name, the system displays the `Bridge Scoring
- Data' screen.
-
-
-
-

-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- MAIN MENU OPTIONS
-
-
- R OPTION
-
- Use the `R' (read) option to retrieve a scoring session
- previously stored on disk. Retrieving old data may be necessary
- for updating or for printing reports. Again, if another session
- is already active and changes have been made and not saved, the
- system beeps and gives you another chance to save the data before
- continuing.
-
- The system asks for the name of the file to retrieve. Enter
- the name exactly as it was entered when the file was created. If
- you are unsure of the file name, press F1 to display a list of
- files in a particular directory.
-
- Once a file is retrieved, the system displays the `Bridge
- Scoring Data' screen.
-
-
- W OPTION
-
- Use the `W' (write) option to save additions and changes made
- to the currently active session onto a data disk in drive B. When
- changes have been made to the current session, sCOREkeeper will
- not allow you to activate another session until you either save
- the changes or verify that they are to be destroyed. Once
- changes are saved, the system returns to the `Main Menu' screen
- and the session remains active.
-
-
- C OPTION
-
- The `C' (continue) option allows you to continue with the
- currently active session. If no session is active, the system
- asks for the name of an output file, just as if the S option was
- used to start a new session. If a session is active, the system
- returns to the `Bridge Scoring Data' screen.
-
-
- X OPTION
-
- The `X' (exit) option leaves the sCOREkeeper system and
- returns you to the operating system prompt. If changes have been
- made to a session and have not been saved, the system beeps and
- gives you another chance to store the changes, or to verify that
- they are to be destroyed.

- FUNCTION KEY DEFINITIONS
-
-
- At any given time, the function keys available and a short
- description of what they do is shown in the bottom two lines of
- the screen. A function key almost always does the same operation
- wherever it is used. The available function keys are described
- below.
-
-
- Function Key Operation
-
- F1 Match Points - displays the current match
- points for each hand and player.
-
- F2 Total Match Points - displays current total
- match points, ranking and percentage score for
- each team.
-
- F3 Page Left - Since sCOREkeeper uses a
- spreadsheet format to display information,
- sometimes not all of the information on one
- "page" will fit on the screen. The page left
- function displays the area of a "page" that is
- out of view to your left.
-
- F4 Page Right - displays the area of a "page"
- that is out of view to your right (see also
- Page Left).
-
- F5 Previous Section - displays information for
- the previous section, if more than one section
- exists. For example, if you are viewing match
- points for Section C, you can switch to match
- points for Section B simply by pressing F5.
-
- F6 Next Section - displays information for the
- next section, if more than one section have
- been defined. For example, if you are viewing
- match points for Section A, you can switch to
- match points for Section B simply by pressing
- F6.
-
- F7 Names - displays the `Contestant Names' screen
- on which contestant names, handicaps and first
- session results of a two session event are
- entered.
-
- F8 Print - displays the print menu to print
- reports.
-
- F9 N/S or E/W - switches the display from

- BRIDGE SCORING DATA SCREEN
-
-
- GENERAL INFORMATION
-
- The `Bridge Scoring Data' screen is used to define the number
- of sections, tables, boards per match, rounds, table movements,
- etc. for the scores to be entered for each section in the
- currently active session. Each time a new scoring session is
- started, the system automatically inserts default field values.
- To keep the default value, simply press the Enter key. To change
- the default, simply type in the new value.
-
- The valid data for some fields may depend on what is
- specified in another field. sCOREkeeper will only allow valid
- data. If invalid data is entered, the systems beeps and the
- cursor will not move until an acceptable value is entered. Once
- all the information is entered, press the F10 key to begin
- recording scores.
-
-
- FIELD DESCRIPTIONS
-
- Each field on the `Bridge Scoring Data' screen is described
- below.
-
- Number of Separate Sections - Indicate the number of different
- sections to be scored. A maximum of five sections is allowed.
- Since sections are scored independently, they may all be of
- different sizes and use different movements.
-
- Overall winners can be calculated over multiple sections.
- When those sections are of different sizes, the scores in the
- section with the lower average are automatically scaled up when
- the "overalls" are calculated and printed. (Please refer to the
- description of the Print Menu.)
-
- Section Names - Sections are identified by the letters A, B, C, D
- and E.
-
- Table Movement - Indicate the letter that corresponds to the
- table movement for the section. For half table movements, except
- One-and-a-half Table Appendix Mitchell, see also the description
- of the `Additional 1/2 Table Rover' field.
-
- M Indicates any standard Mitchell movements for three to 19
- tables. When Mitchell movements are desired for an even
- number of tables, also use the `Skip Round or Bye
- Stand/Relay' field. This option can also be used to
- indicate half table movements, except One-and-a-half Table
- Appendix Mitchell. (See also the `Additional 1/2 Table
- Rover' field description.)

- Table Movements (cont.)
-
- H Indicates Howell movements for three to seven tables only.
- Howell movements in the sCOREkeeper System are fixed
- according to directions in the reference book Duplicate
- Bridge Direction by Alex Groner, published by Barclay Bridge
- Supplies, Inc. of Port Chester, N. Y.
-
- B Indicates any Barometer movements (three to 19 table
- standard Mitchell movements only). Results can be printed
- at the end of each round of play (refer to Print Menu
- description).
-
- A Indicates One-and-a-half Table Appendix Mitchell movements
- for three to 19 tables, counting only the number of full
- tables. This option is most useful for 8 1/2 to 11 1/2
- table movements. The lone East/West pair will be at a table
- numbered one greater than the highest numbered full table.
- The computer automatically sets up a relay of boards between
- table one and the highest numbered full table. In addition,
- if there is an odd number of full tables, the computer
- automatically sets up a skip round on the round number
- computed in the following manner:
- (Number of full tables + 1) / 2.
-
- S Indicates Scrambled Mitchell movements. This option can
- also be used to indicate half table movements, except
- One-and-a-half Table Appendix Mitchell. (See also the
- description of the `Additional 1/2 Table Rover' field.)

- FIELD DESCRIPTIONS (cont.)
-
- Total Number of Full Tables - Indicate the total number of tables
- in play, which depends on the table movement specified.
-
- Mitchell - 3 to 19 tables
- Howell - 3 to 7 tables
- Barometer - 3 to 19 tables
- One-and-a-half Table Appendix Mitchell - 3 to 19 tables,
- counting only the number of full tables
- Half Table (see also the `Additional 1/2 Table Rover' field)
- East/West sit-out - count extra E/W pair as a full table
- North/South bump - count only the number of full tables
-
- Additional 1/2 Table Rover (y/N) - Used with half table
- movements, except One-and-a-half Table Appendix Mitchell. For
- East/West sit-out movements, type "N" for no. For North/South
- bump movements, type "y" for yes. When a bump movement is
- indicated, a message at the bottom of the screen tells you
- that the bump movement can be printed by pressing Alt-F1. Two
- copies are printed, one for each team member. Scores for all
- East/West pairs that sit out a round, or North/South pairs that
- are bumped, are factored up when the final results are printed.
-
- Skip round or Bye Stand/Relay - This field becomes available when
- an even number of tables is specified for Mitchell movements. If
- you type "S" to indicate there will be a skip round, you must
- also fill in the `Skip Round \ Number of Tables' field (a normal
- default value is provided). If you type "B" to indicate a Relay
- Bye Stand movement, you must also fill in the fields `Relay
- boards between tables' and `Bye Stand between tables' (normal
- default values are provided for these fields).
-
- Number of Boards Per Match - Any number of boards per match can
- be entered as long as the total number of boards in play is 40 or
- less. This field is not available when Howell table movements
- are indicated. Fixed Howell movements in the sCOREkeeper System
- have been taken from the reference book Duplicate Bridge
- Direction by Alex Groner.
-
- Number of Rounds to Play - Indicate the number of rounds to play.
- Up to 2 "revenge" rounds are allowed.
-
- Two Session Event (y/N)? - Indicate whether or not scores to be
- entered are for a two session event. If they are, the first
- session carry over scores are entered on the `Contestant Names'
- screen. Final winners will be calculated for this session scores
- and for total scores from both sessions.

- Handicap Game (y/N) - Indicate whether or not teams will have
- handicaps. Handicaps are entered in the `Contestant Names'
- display. Winners are calculated both with and without handicaps
- added to the actual results; handicaps are added into printed
- results only.
-
- 1st Board Number at Table 1 - sCOREkeeper offers a random
- "computer hand" generator that can be used to make up hands.
- This field must be filled when computer hands are "made up" at
- one table and then passed to another table before the first round
- begins.
-
- 1st E/W Pair Number at Table 1 - This field is required when
- East/West pairs are moved before the first round begins, as in a
- "computer hand" competition.
-
- Skip Round / Number of Tables - When an "S" is entered in the
- `Skip round or Bye Stand/Relay' field, use this field to indicate
- the number of the skip round and the number of tables to be
- skipped in that round.
-
- Relay boards between tables - When a "B" is entered in the `Skip
- round or Bye Stand/Relay' field, use this field to indicate the
- numbers of the two adjacent tables that the boards will be
- relayed between.
-
- Bye Stand between tables - When a "B" is entered in the `Skip
- round or Bye Stand/Relay' field, use this field to indicate the
- numbers of the tables that the bye stand will be between.
-
- Top Score on a Board - This number is calculated by sCOREkeeper
- and displayed for the Director's convenience.
-
- Section Averages - This number is calculated by sCOREkeeper and

- RAW SCORES SCREEN
-
-
- GENERAL INFORMATION
-
- Scores for both North/South and East/West pairs are entered
- and maintained on the `Raw Scores' screen. The "N/S" or "E/W" in
- the upper left corner indicates which direction is being
- displayed. Use the F3 and F4 function keys to display the area
- of the score sheet that is out of view, and the F5 and F6
- function keys to switch between sections. At any time, you may
- also use the F1 or F2 function keys to display the current match
- point scores or standings of the tournament, and the F8 function
- key to print the scores and standings.
-
-
- SPECIAL KEY FUNCTIONS
-
- On the `Raw Scores' screen, in addition to the function keys
- listed on the bottom two lines of the screen, some keys also have
- special functions.
-
- The "h" key works the same as the HOME key to change the
- round number.
-
- The arrow keys, tab key and shift-tab keys move the cursor as
- normal.
-
- The "e", "x", "s" and "d" keys move the cursor up, down, left
- and right respectively. These are useful when the Num-Lock
- key is set for data entry.
-
- Data entry can be terminated by pressing the Enter key or by
- typing a plus (+) or a minus (-). For example, the score
- -120 can be entered "120-" without having to press the Enter
- key.
-
- The last score entered can be repeated by typing a plus (+)
- and pressing the Enter key. The negative of the last score
- entered can be repeated by typing a minus (-) and pressing
- the Enter key. These two functions are very useful when
- scores are entered from the "traveling" slips and there are a
- lot of similar scores in succession.

- RAW SCORE SCREEN
-
-
- ENTERING SCORES
-
- Scores may be entered in the following two ways. Both
- methods show the pair number and hand number as each score is
- entered, as well as the opponent's pair number and round number
- at the bottom of the screen. Trailing zeroes do not have to be
- entered if that feature was selected when initial parameters were
- set up in the INSTALL program.
-
-
- 1. At the end of each round - Collect "pick-up slips" at the end
- of each round. Use the HOME key to indicate the round
- number. The matches played in the indicated round are
- highlighted on the screen. Enter the scores for each match.
- Negative scores are automatically entered for the opponents.
-
- 2. From the traveling slips at the end of the complete session -
- If scores are being entered for only one or two sections, you
- may wait until the end of the session and enter all the
- scores from the "traveling" score sheets for each board.
- Change the round number to zero and sCOREkeeper will allow
- you to enter the scores for individual tables for each pair
- just as you would read them off the traveling slips.
- Negative scores are automatically entered for the opponents.
-
-
- AVERAGE SCORES
-
- There are three ways to use the Average Scores feature:
-
- 1. Type AVE or just A to get an "average" score for both the
- North/South and East/West teams.
-
- 2. Type AVE+ or just A+ to get an "average plus" score for the
- displayed team and an "average minus" score the opposing
- team. Or type AVE- or just A- to get an "average minus" score
- for the displayed team and an "average plus" score for the
- opposing team.
-
- 3. Type AVE++ or just A++ to get an "average plus" score for
- both the North/South and East/West teams. Or type AVE-- or
- just A-- to get an "average minus" score for both North/South
- and East/West teams.

-
- EDITING SCORES
-
- Scores can be changed at any time by changing the round
- number to zero and moving the cursor to any position on the score

- positions on the screen for hand/pair combinations that are
- valid matches for the number of tables and table rotation
- selected.
-
-
- ERASING SCORES
-
- Scores can be erased at any time by changing the entered

- CONTESTANT NAMES SCREEN
-
-
- The main purpose of this screen is to enter the names of all
- the contestants. Handicaps are also entered on this screen if
- this is a "handicap game". In addition, first session results
- are entered if this is a two session event (see `Bridge Scoring
- Data Screen').
-
- Names are entered in pairs and each pair is numbered. Type a
- name then press the Enter key to go on to the next name. Use the
- F9 key to switch between North/South and East/West pairs. The
- "N/S" or "E/W" in the upper left corner of the screen indicates
- whether the pairs entered are for North/South or East/West.
-
- For handicaps and first session results, the system beeps if
- an unacceptable value is entered. You must enter a valid value
- to continue.
-
- Press the ESC key when all information has been entered. The
- system displays the Section Titles and ACBL Award Calculation
- screen.

- SECTION TITLES AND ACBL AWARD CALCULATION SCREEN
-
-
- SECTION TITLES
-
- The Section Titles portion of the screen enables the Director
- to enter up to four lines of text that will be shown at the top
- of each page of reports printed using the F8 key. Each line can
- be up to 60 characters long.
-
- Section titles are not required. Use the End key to skip
- this portion of the screen and move the cursor to the first
- position under ACBL Award Calculation.
-
-
- ACBL AWARD CALCULATION
-
- sCOREkeeper automatically inserts default values in this
- portion of the screen, and calculates the section awards based on
- the number in the "Class of Game" field. If necessary, change the
- default values to those appropriate for your club, and use a six
- for Special Case in the `Class of Game' field to type in your own
- section award values.
-
- The "Additional Factor" field is used as specified by the
- ACBL for special events like men's pairs or women's pairs.

- PRINT MENU OPTIONS
-
-
- When you press the F8 key to print reports, the SCORE
- program displays the following menu options:
-
- T - Total Scores Only
- H - Individual Hand Scores Only
- B - Both Total Scores and Individual Hand Scores
- I - Individual Partnership Result Slips
- S - Single Round Match Point Results
- X - Exit the Print Menu
-
- Make sure your printer is on and ready before making a selection.
-
- Scores for all East/West pairs that had a sit-out round, and
- all North/South pairs that were bumped, are factored up when the
- results are printed.
-
-
- SELECTING WHICH SECTIONS TO PRINT
-
- If only one section has been defined, the system prints the
- report as soon as a report selection is made. If more than one
- section has been defined, the system asks "Print data for ALL of
- the sections?" If you answer yes, information on all defined
- sections will be printed.
-
- If you answer no, the system gives you the opportunity to
- select which sections to print and to indicate which sections
- should be combined. The system shows each section name, and
- beneath each name is a number. The last section that was active
- has the number 1; the rest have zeroes. For example, suppose
- three sections, A, B and C have been defined and B was the last
- active section. The screen would show this:
-
- Print data for all of the sections? N
-
- A B C
- 0 1 0
-
- Mark sections to be scored together with a similar
- number (1-5):
- Press ESC when ready to print...
-
- Following the screen instructions, use the numbers 1 to 5 to
- indicate which sections to combine and which to print. For
- example, if the numbers were changed to the following:
-
- A B C
- 2 1 1
-
- then scores for sections B and C would be combined and printed
- first, followed by scores for section A.

- PRINT MENU OPTIONS
-
-
- PRINTING OVERALL RESULTS
-
- Overall results are available for any combination of defined
- sections whenever an option that includes total scores is
- selected and there is more than one defined section. Once you
- have indicated which sections to include and combine, the system
- asks "Print the Overall Winners?" If you answer yes (Y), the
- system uses your include/combine indications to determine what
- overall scores to print. Using the previous example:
-
- A B C
- 2 1 1
-
- the system would print overall results for sections B and C
- combined first, then for section A alone.
-
-
- TOTAL SCORES ONLY
-
- The system prints overall results for sections in the order
- defined by the user (see `Printing Overall Results'). Whenever
- the teams in a section have played a different number of hands,
- scores are factored up at the time the report is printed. Scores
- are also factored up before overall winners are calculated if
- overall results are requested for more than one section and
- section averages are different.
-
-
- INDIVIDUAL HAND SCORES
-
- This option prints hand by hand results, including both raw
- score and match points, for each team in the competition. The
- hands are numbered across the top and the pair numbers go down
- the page.
-
-
- BOTH TOTAL SCORES AND INDIVIDUAL HAND SCORES
-
- Total scores for the North/South teams are printed first,
- followed by the individual hand scores for the North/South teams.
- The sequence is then repeated for the East/West teams.
-
-
- INDIVIDUAL PARTNERSHIP RESULT SLIPS
-
- At the end of the competition, this option can be used to
- print individual result slips for each team in the competition.
- The slips are printed four per page and can be cut along the
- dotted lines and handed to the contestants. Each slip shows the
- contestant name, overall results and the results for that team on
- each individual hand they played.

- print results at the end of each round of play. When this report
- option is selected, a round number must be specified. After
- indicating which sections to include and/or combine, press the
- Escape key and the system will ask for the round number. Make
- sure your printer is on and ready before typing the round number.
